claude init: Initializing Claude Code in Your Project

When working with Claude Code (the command-line tool from Anthropic), the best way to start in a project is by running claude init.

This command analyzes your project directory and automatically generates or updates a CLAUDE.md memory file tailored to your codebase.

What Does claude init Do?

Running claude init performs the following steps:

1. Scans Repository Structure: Identifies build tools, frameworks, languages, and package managers (e.g., Magento, PHP, Node.js, Python, Jekyll).
2. Generates CLAUDE.md: Creates a structured markdown document containing key repository instructions, common commands (build, test, lint), and style guidelines.
3. Sets Up Configuration Defaults: Ensures local settings and permission rule templates are ready for execution.

Usage

Navigate to your project root directory and execute:

claude init
